Why become a Police Officer?

What does a Police Offer do?

Being a Police officer can be extremely tough but also very rewarding. Police Officers are primarily there to protect the public, provide a presence in the community and support victims of crime. Not all jobs in the Police force involve working on the front line.

I would like to joint the Police force, but don’t want to be an Officer – are there other opportunities?

You don’t have to work on the front line to make a difference in your community. You may wish to become a Police Community Support Officer, providing a presence on the streets, interacting with the public and assisting Officers at large events like concerts.

You could also consider becoming a Special Constable. They are a group of trained volunteers who support the local Police force. Specials volunteer a minimum of four hours a week, and come from many walks of life, for example they maybe postman, teachers, nurses, secretaries etc.

You may also consider a support role, providing administrative assistance, handling calls and working on the front desk.

How do I join?

Applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply to join the Police. There are no qualification requirements, but you will have to undertake some written tests.

If you want to become a Police officer, then you will need to complete a two year probationary period, where you will be out on the beat gaining as much experience as possible. The minimum age to apply is 18 and there is no particular upper age limit.

If you have committed a particular offence in the past, this may make you ineligible. You must also be physically fit.

I would like to become a Police Officer. How much can I expect to earn?

Pay varies from force to force, but officers generally start on around £20,000, rising each year depending on experience.

There are also a wide range of pensions and benefits including fully paid sick leave and paid over time.
