You could start an apprenticeship in a salon, which can take up to three years. You could go a College where they teach hairdressing or you could go to your local salon, get a trainee job and learn to become a hairdresser as you go along.
How to Become a Hairdresser
This is a popular route as you will be in the salon everyday, dealing with paying customers, gaining invaluable experience.

What qualifications do I need?

You don't actually need any qualifications to become a hairdresser, just a real passion for the job. You can go to College and take an MVQ, which is in three stages over three years or you could train for a degree in Hairdressing.

What skills do I need?

You will need excellent people skills. You have to enjoy communicating with people to be a hairdresser and you need to be able to read what people want. You also need to be creative, as it a creative job, and you should also have a good sense of fashion, keeping up with current trends.

As a hairdresser you need to be able to keep a cool head as it can get very busy at weekends and at seasonal times like Christmas.

How do I get work experience?

If you are training to become a hairdresser at College, you can ask your tutors to arrange some work experience for you at a local salon. They can ask if it is ok for them to send a trainee along for a day’s experience, or longer.

I would like to become a Hairdresser. How much could I expect to earn?

This can depend on where you are based. Prices are higher in cities like London. If you under 21, the going rate is £3.20 an hour and those over 21 can expect £3.70.

If customers are particularly happy with their experience, they may choose to tip you which will boost your overall income gained from hairdressing.

There are also lots of resource sites on hair styles and products plus salons and college courses, see below for several popular hairdressing web sites that serve UK stylists.
