What is a Holiday Representative?

A holiday representative is a person who is responsible for looking after holidaymakers on package holidays all over the world.

Duties may vary depending on the tour operator, but typically include meeting guests at the airport, escorting them to their accommodation, hosting welcome meetings, organising excursions, handling complaints, checking hotel safety procedures etc.

Why become a Holiday Rep?

Although it can be very hard work, being a Holiday Rep can be very rewarding and enjoyable. It is a great way of traveling around the world and getting paid for it!

Two days are rarely the same and you will meet many people on your travels, from holidaymakers, to locals. The tour operator will pay for your flights, to and from the resorts, provide free travel insurance and provide you with accommodation, within the hotel you represent, or you may share a villa with other reps.

How can I become a Holiday Rep?

There are many tour operators out there, constantly looking for new staff. The qualifications needed, will depend on the position you are looking for. Some companies require reps to be 18, whilst others will require you to be 21. A formal qualification isn't generally required, although good GCSEs and a qualification in Travel and Tourism will boost your chances.

You don't necessarily need to speak a second language - you just need to be outgoing and confident. If you will be working with children, you will need to have a police check. That will be obtained by the operator for you.

Which resorts will I work in?

Most tour operators will ask you if there is a particular resort you would like to work in, although it is not guaranteed that you will be based there. It will be a matter of where you are needed.

What will I do in the winter season?

Once the busy summer season is over, and you have proved yourself as a good rep, the tour operator may offer you some winter work. It may be in a winter sun resort or a ski resort, if that option is offered.

If you would prefer to come home over the winter months, then you may be offered work within the company in the UK, in their offices or travel agencies.

I would like to become a Holiday Rep. How much can I expect to earn?

The starting salary for a holiday rep is around £500 per month, including any commission from selling excursions etc.

Although it may not sound a lot, your accommodation should be provided for you by your tour operator and you may get meal vouchers for the hotel that you are representing.
